In May of 2019, Outside the Box organized a chalk mural workshop at Lincoln Park Middle School. In small groups, students took their own designs and brought them to life outside the school.
Students learned about basic design techniques including the use of simple shapes and repetitive patterns. Using the prompt, "Summer" as fuel, they then created their own designs and put them on paper.
Some groups chatted freely while making their murals, while some groups ran into creative differences. Some groups chose an integration of everyone's designs, while some groups focused on one. By the end of it, hands were dusty with color, and all groups had put together a unique mural with its own personality.
Working with chalk is cheap, easy, and low stakes since it washes away in time. Next time creativity strikes, consider taking it outside!
